Things To Do For Couples On The Islands of Guernsey

Looking for things to do as a couple on the Islands of Guernsey?

Planning a holiday itinerary can be overwhelming, so let us do it for you. We’ve curated a list of activities for each kind of duo, so no matter what kind of getaway you’re seeking, we’ve got you covered.

The Outdoor Explorers

For those who love to get outdoors, Guernsey is the ideal island retreat. Explore the island on foot and enjoy everything from a gentle stroll along the beach, to hiking and cliff walking along the coastline. Whether you’re looking for a 30-minute walk amongst your other activities, or a full day of hiking, you will find endless walking routes to cater to your itinerary.

Pack a picnic lunch and head to one of our bays or a clifftop bench amongst the trees to enjoy a romantic and secluded afternoon for two. If you’re looking for sit-down dining amidst your outdoor travels, stop by one of the island’s cafes and kiosks sprinkled around the coast.

For those looking for adventure, the water sports available on the island are not to be missed. Head over to the west coast and surf at Vazon Bay, or stop by Cobo Bay and enjoy stand-up paddle boarding at sunset, followed by fish and chips from the Cobo Fish & Chip Bar. With kayaking, windsurfing, sea swimming and more available to enjoy, grab your wetsuits (or swimsuits if you’re brave!) and suncream, and we’ll see you on the water.

Why not take your venture across the water and explore the island of Sark. A trip to Sark is like stepping back in time - as cars are prohibited. Instead, hire some bikes and cycle to remote bays. You can also get your adrenaline going by taking on coasteering, sea kayaking and cave exploration in an exhilarating tour of the island. With a vast number of caves to be investigated, you will be spoilt for choice, though the best and most accessible ones to start with are Gouliot Caves and Boutique Caves - but make sure to go with a guide.

The History Lovers

For the historians, Guernsey is full of exciting remnants of the past, and what better time to explore Guernsey's history than in this our 80th year of Liberation? With neolithic structures, castles, World War II artefacts, art galleries and museums, your cultural expedition awaits.

Remaining from the five-year occupation during WWII, when the Channel Islands became the only British territory that the Nazis ever conquered, you will find fortifications along Guernsey’s coastlines that now form a part of everyday life. Step back in time and discover island life during the war at the German Occupation Museum, the German Underground Hospital, the Shrine of the Sacred Heart and more. As well as these imposing structures, you can also spot Norman forts and castles around the coast, standing guard.

Visit Guernsey’s only stately home, Sausmarez Manor, and discover architecture, artefacts and art belonging to the family who have resided there for over 800 years. With a summer Saturday Farmer’s Market as well as guided tours of the house and extensive grounds, you can spend a whole day exploring. For an extra thrill, join one of their evening ghost tours around the manor, which is considered the most haunted house on the island.

In St Peter Port, you will also find 800-year-old Castle Cornet. Housing centuries of island history, the castle contains four museums: the Story of Castle Cornet; 201 Squadron (RAF) Museum; Royal Guernsey Light Infantry Museum; and the Royal Guernsey Militia Museum. With harbour views over St Peter Port, as well as across to our sister islands of Herm and Sark, a stroll around Castle Cornet and its historic gardens makes for a great day out. Several events also take place there throughout the year, including plays. If you’re visiting in summer, pack a picnic and attend one of the castle’s open-air cinema screenings with a sunset backdrop over the water.

The Relaxed Couple

If you’re coming to Guernsey to relax and recharge, here are some leisurely activities not to be missed out from your romantic escape.

The natural beauty of our islands makes a fantastic setting for any date. For an evening out, head to Cobo Bay on the west coast for the best sunset views. The Rockmount is a great option for those looking for a sit-down meal with ocean views, especially if you’re visiting in the winter months when the weather is a bit cooler. If you’re visiting in the summer, attend one of the Cobo Balcony Gigs and soak in the summer sun whilst enjoying a waterfront concert.

For a lazy afternoon on the coast, take a trip to Fermain Bay. Nestled away in the south-east of the island, this is a great spot for boats to anchor and spend a summer day soaking in the sun. The Fermain Beach Cafe offers an excellent range of meal options, and you can enjoy a refreshment overlooking one of the most beautiful waterfront spots on Guernsey.

If you’re keen to discover our neighbouring islands of Herm and Sark, there are plenty of slow-paced activities to enjoy. With its own microclimate and sandy beaches, Herm is the perfect backdrop to your getaway. Stroll along the cliffs, enjoy a seaside picnic and finish your day with evening drinks at the White House Hotel lawn. Hop over to Sark and enjoy a horse and carriage tour of the island, and, with the low light pollution, it is also a great spot for an evening of stargazing.

For an extra treat, book a spa day for two. The St Pierre Park Hotel & Golf Resort and the Old Government House Hotel & Spa both offer an array of spa treatments including massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and more. With pools, hottubs, saunas and steam rooms, as well as relaxation rooms, you can spend a day enjoying a true detox. Follow this with a delicious afternoon tea at either location to add the final touches to your day of relaxation.

The Activity Duo

Looking to fill your island itinerary with activities? Here are a few to get you started.

Independent art studio, Iris & Dora, offers an array of creative activities to add to your itinerary. Working with a range of mediums including arts and crafts, textiles, ceramics, painting, drawing, glasswork, printmaking and more, there is plenty to try your hand at. Offering workshops and classes, why not join their late night pottery painting or their Thursday evening pottery wheel workshop?

Head to the driving range at Golf19 and spend an afternoon putting your swing to the test. With a restaurant at the venue, you can enjoy some refreshments at your lane during the game, or have a well-earned sit-down meal afterwards. If you’re looking to keep the sporting activities going, book a session at Karting Guernsey and race around their outdoor floodlit 440m circuit for an extra thrill.

If you’re visiting between April and September, spend an evening on the Rocquette Cider Tour & Tasting. Located on a family farm in a sun-soaked valley, enjoy the scenic views whilst learning about the history and process of cider making on a guided walk through the orchards. Including a tasting of the ciders, fruit liqueurs, local cheeses and apple chutneys, this 90 minute tour is a great way to spend an evening getting to know some local cuisine.

For an evening in St Peter Port, enjoy dinner at one of our many restaurants, followed by an evening at performance hall St James, where music, comedy and more are available year round. Check out their calendar to see what’s coming up. If you want to keep the evening going afterwards, head back into town for some drinks and nibbles.
