This route over even terrain with a mix of quiet country lanes and the busier coastal thoroughfare is an ideal short ride for the novice, and suitable for a summer evening.
The west coast road provides opportunities to leave the route temporarily and take in the scenic contrasts of rugged rocky headlands and golden sandy bays, and also visit the historical fortifications at Rousse – a loopholed tower with an adjoining open battery constructed between 1778/79 – and Grandes Rocques where an infantry strongpoint and resistance nest of German origin is incorporated within an earlier coastal defensive position. The inland part of the route winds its way through pleasant pastureland and past traditional old Guernsey farmhouses.
The opportunity to study the way of life a hundred years ago is presented at the Folk and Costume Museum at Saumarez Park (check for opening times) – no riding here please!
The charming nature of Guernsey is amply demonstrated by the petite fields and easy views across the northern part of the island.
