2025 is the 80th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation, commemorating the Islands' freedom from German Occupation during World War II.
Celebrations will be taking place throughout the year with Liberation Day itself taking place on 9 May. The festivities provide an opportunity for islanders to remember the days of Occupation, which played such a monumental role in shaping both the landscape and the lives of the people of Guernsey.
A full programme of events and entertainment for all ages is planned with a strong focus on the St Peter Port seafront. In recognition of this year’s milestone anniversary, the day will see the return of traditional events, alongside new events and activities.
Parishes outside of St Peter Port have also started preparing to hold a range of events, ensuring truly island-wide Liberation celebrations.
The Channel Islands were the only occupied part of the British Isles during the Second World War. German forces invaded Guernsey on 30th June 1940, where they remained for five years until 9th May 1945, now celebrated as Liberation Day.
